PROGRAM & ACTIVITIES

Understanding that economic frailty and necessity are the main motivators of trafficking and conflict, ABC Nepal has continuously supported and run programmes designed for the financial empowerment and independence of women. ABC/N has significant experience in these fields and is committed to sustainable development and social change for the betterment of women. Past and current activities include:

  • Gainful Employment Programmes which support high-risk girls, internally displaced peoples (IDPs) and survivors of trafficking by developing vocational skills such as sewing, tempo driving, cooking, candle-making, auto-mechanic and Community Health Worker training through formal and non-formal education and job placements/ apprenticeships.
  • Community Radio Programmes and Street Dramas have used radio plays and local actors to disseminate information to bring about positive behavioural changes and raise awareness about trafficking issues and HIV/AIDS.
  • Scholarship Programme which provides scholarships to girls from poor and disadvantaged communities throughout Nepal to engage girls in education, thus tackling female illiteracy and providing opportunities for a more secure future.
  • Transit homes to house women and girls rescued from trafficking and other forms of violence and displacement. Here they are provided with counselling, healthcare services, formal and non-formal education, skills training and assistance to repatriate them to their homes where possible.
  • Doctor visits and medical assistance for residents of the transit homes, community members and through specific health camps, referring people to hospitals for further treatment where necessary
  • Women's Leadership Training to help women gain self-confidence and knowledge on issues such as violence against women, trafficking, health and personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS, legal and civic rights and financial management.
  • Capacity-building for VDC (Village Development Committee)-elected women representatives to develop the capacities of elected women representatives by training them on politically relevant subjects such as the legal, constitutional and fundamental rights of women, international conventions such as the Convention to End Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and also the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Cross-border Programme for the Prevention of Trafficking and Rehabilitation of Potential and Rescued Victims. The project is strengthening surveillance in border areas through cooperation with police and border security services in addition to other NGOs working in the areas; creating information networks; generating awareness in villages against trafficking; empowering women representatives and rehabilitating rescued girls.
  • Women's Savings and Credit Groups, of which ABC Nepal have created  over 250, involving over 7000 women to improve their economic stability. Participation of women has been increasing, leading to a rise in their incomes through various inter-loaning and savings activities. A Cooperative Award has also been set up to honour the outstanding work of the best cooperative/s every year.
